Although being in my thirties now, I've always found it harder coding to music than to silence. It might be because I'm a musician, and so when I hear an interesting rhythm or riff, it draws my attention, and I start trying to work out how it's played. If one of my favourite songs is on, then I just sit and listen to it, which is worse than conversation, as I lose my train of thought, and I get no extra project-related information.

I've got a pair of proper cyberman headphones (i.e. they're silver and they cover my ears completely), so I sometimes put them on without any music. This gives the do-not-disturb signal, and makes the conversations muffled, but I'm not distracted by the music either.

Its not ALL over 30's that find it distracting!

I am 31 and find it much more productive to work with some quiet music in the background (via headphones at work of course)

I am a big believer in doors to close though, i think the ideal is 2 developers per office with a closeable door and then breakout areas for when a larger discussion is needed.
