I have come to a similiar conclusion, although using a different technology. :)

For a while, I've been using offlineimap download my mail from my imap server on whichever computer I happen to be using. This works fairly well, except that offlineimap won't create locally-created folders on the server...

My solution: run mutt in a screen (think text-based vnc) session my server.
I can ssh into it from anywhere, and it's just about as fast as it is locally.

Who needs an email application on every computer? Just keep it on one. :)

I like being able to access my emails when I am offline and in business meetings so I still use a desktop mail client.

Hey look you use Vista. How does that treat you?

I'm just not offline that often any more when I'm at my computer. At home the net is pretty much always connected if the computer is on. When I go away I'm usually staying somewhere with net access for when I need it. I'd say the planes is about the only place that I'm really offline for long stretches at a time and my laptop battery is only a couple of hours longs so I tend not to do computer things there anyway.

Vista's ok. I like the run box in the start menu. It's pretty enough to look at. I had problems with stability at first but that ended up being because my laptop's RAM was broken. I wouldn't pay to upgrade but I think it's worth getting with a new machine (I got it with my new laptop).
